Not sure how to contact you directly, but I thought this would work. I’m looking for a way to combine my professional experience in Information Security and system auditing with Aviation. I understand that corporate aviation departments need safety audits that I might be able to assist in. Perhaps you have some ideas? I’m also good at documenting processes, etc.

Liz, thanks for posting a link to your blog on Linked In: it’s great to get a perspective on business aviation from outside the US. Are you planning on attending ABACE 2012 in Shanghai next year? The website is ABACE.aero. The show is being put on by AsBAA and NBAA, and it looks like all the big name manufacturers are already on-board. It’s certainly exciting to see our industry rebounding worldwide.

Thanks Jon. Patriot Partners (MDH’s holding company) seems to be doing pretty well though. What Tilton’s done for MDH is fantastic. The company was incredibly sickly before she took it under her wing. She’s working with suppliers and third party investors to turn it around and help to sell a specific product. She’s certainly not working with fledgling start ups for the aircraft parts – rather persuading people who’ve already got the airworthiness certs that MDH is a viable purchaser and not likely to go bust or not pay its bills. Obviously a risk factor, especially after the last couple of years in the industry, which saw the death of many budding airframers.

Hey, I’m really pleased to have found your posts, it’s the exact kind of blog I was looking for. I’m really interested in the emerging business aviation market in China and hearing about developments.

I guess it is quite a niche topic though, I find it hard to find information and updates; are there any sites or other blogs you would recommend?

Will you be covering SIBAS (Shanghai Intl Business Aviation Show) in March at all?

I’m not contending that vertical integration is by any means doomed to failure in all circumstances – far from it, it clearly represents a significant strategy in developing and maintaining production efficiency and competitive advantage for many companies and sectors. I was really just trying to add a word of caution that it is not the golden bullet I fear some view it as. For example the oft cited problems AT&T experienced in adapting (or not) to developments in telecoms and ICT, its struggle to keep pace with fledgling start-ups that were non-unionised and focused on specific new technologies and markets and its corporate ideology of ‘monopoly is good for us so good for the end customer’ perhaps demonstrate this. Of course, I’m not saying MDH is seeking total world domination, just that there are lessons to learn from other sectors.

Great article – good to be reminded that what really counts in business is the human element, from the CEO to the cleaner. I’m not always convinced by the arguments for vertical integration in complex manufacturing though – I fear there can be a danger of ending up jack of all trades and master of very few.
